The Phantom Plot

Act One:
The plot to Phantom of the Opera is simple, there's a phantom in the Paris Opera House. Just kidding. Actually the plot revolves around a new diva, Christine Daa, who has just been given a chance to sing to lead when the prima donna, Carlotta gets sick. Christine is a shy girl, who does not really believe in her talent, but as Madame Giry says, "She has been well taught." Christine has been receiving voice lessons from the mysterious Angel of Music (a.k.a. The Phantom). That night, Christine meets up with an old childhood chum, Raoul, and they reminesce during the song, "Little Lotte." When Raoul asks her to dinner, she refuses because she has a lesson with the Angel of Music. The Phantom, enraged with Raoul, lures Christine into his labryinth during the song, "Phantom of the Opera." He sings her a haunting love song ("Music of the Night"), in which he seduces her with his power over the music.

When Christine wakes the next morning, she is frightened ("I Remember/Stranger than You Dreamt It"), in this scene, she pulls off his mask, showing his horribly disfigured face. Oh the humanity! He takes her back to the theater, where the managers are going mad from the various notes ("Notes and Prima Donna"). Carlotta soon storms in, furious at a letter telling her that her days at the opera are numbered. The managers reassure her by giving her the lead in the new opera, much to the Phantom's displeasure.

During the opera, Carlotta loses her voice and the body of Buquet drops to the floor. Raoul and Christine escape to the roof of the opera house ("All I Ask of You"). This song of theirs makes the Phantom mad and he sings, "You will curse the day you did not do, all the Phantom asked of you...!"

Act Two:

The opera has sustained a kind of peacefulness for the last few months and they are now celebrating their Masquerade. During the song, we learn that Christine and Raoul are engaged and when the Phantom trumps onto the scene, he is clearly upset. He hands the managers a copy of his new opera, "Don Juan Triumphant," and tells Christine that she is still bound to him

During the rehearsals, the cast is complaining about how horrible the new opera is. Here Christine breaks forth and says she cannot sing the lead, "Duty or not," but Raoul comes to the rescue, coming up with a plan to ensare the phantom.

Meanwhile, Christine goes to visit her father's grave ("Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again") where the Phantom appears and tries to win her back. Once again Raoul intervenes and brings Christine back to him.

During the opera itself, everything is going somewhat smoothly until the end of "Point of No Return" where Christine pulls off the Phantom's mask in front of the audience. Enraged, the Phantom drags her down to the labrinyth and...you want to know? Go read the book, see the movie or see the musical.

Return to the Phantom's Palace.
